How Much Time Am I Allowed to Search AgeLine?

Inactivity cannot exceed 20 minutes or you will be disconnected.
"Inactivity" is defined as any of the following:

  1. Not keying or moving around the following screens: AgeLine Database Search Menu, AgeLine Search screens (Basic, Advanced, Multiple-Options, and Advanced Subject), AgeLine Search Results, AgeLine Search--Marked Items, or AgeLine Search--Items in Shopping Cart
  2. Reading or printing the AgeLine Search Help screens
  3. Searching on AARP Webplace or the Webplace Research Center rather than the AgeLine Search screens
  4. Returning to the AgeLine Home Page
  5. Submitting an order to Infotrieve, which connects to the Infotrieve web site.
  6. Linking to another site on the Internet

Explanations

  1. If you are inactive for more than 20 minutes while connected to the AgeLine search session, you will be disconnected to allow other AgeLine searchers access to the database.

  2. Clicking on HELP TOPICS launches a second browser window. You will not lose your connection to the AgeLine search session, but the time spent reading or printing one or more AgeLine Search Help screens cannot exceed 20 minutes or you will be disconnected. To return to the AgeLine session within 20 minutes:

Click on the original browser icon at the bottom of your screen
        OR
Close out of the Help Topics browser window by clicking on the X in the upper right-hand
corner of the Help Topics window or clicking on FILE at the top left of the Help Topics window
    and then clicking on CLOSE.

  3. The search box and the search link on the AARP Webplace navigation bar (at the very top of the screen, if you scroll up) connect to a search page for the Research Center site on AARP Webplace. Keying a query in the AARP search box will temporarily take you out of the AgeLine search session and will provide results based on a search of the Research Center site, not AgeLine. If you are away from the AgeLine search session longer than 20 minutes, you will be disconnected from AgeLine. Use the BACK button on your browser to return to the AgeLine Search session.

Clicking on HOME at the very top or bottom of the page will take you to the home page of AARP Webplace. If you browse or search in Webplace, you are considered "inactive" as an AgeLine searcher and will be disconnected after 20 minutes.

  4. If you use your browser's BACK button from the AgeLine Search Menu screen to return to the AgeLine Home Page, you will be outside of the AgeLine search session. If you return to the AgeLine search session by using the Browser's FORWARD button within 20 minutes, you may continue to search.

  5. If you submit an order to Infotrieve for one or more articles, a second browser window opens up to facilitate this. You must return to your AgeLine search browser window within 20 minutes to remain connected to your AgeLine search. Click on the X in the upper right-hand corner of the Infotrieve window to return to your AgeLine search.

  6. Similarly, linking to a site elsewhere on the Internet, which will open up another browser session, will be interpreted as inactivity by the AgeLine search engine and cannot exceed 20 minutes. Click on the browser BACK button to return to the AgeLine search.

How Can I Tell If I Am Still in the AgeLine Search Session?

In the upper left-hand corner of your browser on the title bar, you will see the name of your current page (for example, "AgeLine Advanced Search"). All of the AgeLine search session screens have the words "AgeLine" and "Search" in the title bar. If "Search" is missing, as it is on the AgeLine Help pages, then your current screen is not an AgeLine search session.

However, you may have a search session open in AgeLine even though your current screen is not a search session. To determine your status and find an open AgeLine search screen, click on any other open browser icons at the bottom of your page or use your BACK and FORWARD buttons. If these do not bring up an AgeLine search screen, you will need to reconnect your search session at the AgeLine Home Page.

What Is the Proper Way to Exit an AgeLine Search?

To exit properly from searching AgeLine, click on the EXIT SEARCH button on one of the search screens or on the AgeLine Search Menu page. This will immediately free up the session to other searchers.
